The Transforming Places, Practices, and Pedagogies Collaborative (TP3C) is a research unit within the School of Architecture at the University of Utah, dedicated to conducting architectural research. The built environment is undergoing exponential growth in both scale and complexity, thereby necessitating the evolution of architectural practice and pedagogy. Architects are currently confronted with the escalating requirement to bolster their creative design endeavors with research-grounded practices and advanced technologies. Contemporary practice must entail the design and realization of sustainable and energy-efficient buildings while simultaneously maintaining cost-effectiveness and occupant well-being. This focus aligns with the critical challenge of mitigating climate change while ensuring continued societal growth.

TP3C addresses these intersecting needs through the implementation of research initiatives in building science, coupled with targeted educational and outreach programs. Furthermore, TP3C seeks to establish a bridge between academia and the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry. This collaborative approach fosters the identification of innovative solutions to critical industry challenges, while expediting the integration of research findings into architectural practice. The realization of these objectives would propel innovation to the forefront of the profession, ensuring rapid implementation of novel materials, technologies, and methodologies.

TP3C’s mission is to:

  • Develop new knowledge, tools, processes, and spur innovation in architecture.
  • Engage in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that addresses current challenges in architecture.
  • Bridge the gap between architectural profession and research and engage with the industry and other partners in collaborative research projects.
  • Extend design excellence and application of research results into communities through our outreach efforts.
