Liberty Park Greenhouse Revitalization Study

"Liberty Park Greenhouse Revitalization Study" documents the outcomes of a revitalization study for the Liberty Park Greenhouse in Salt Lake City, Utah. The study was conducted by the University of Utah School of Architecture in collaboration with the Salt Lake City Public Lands, as part of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) initiative. The CIP initiative consists of three coordinated efforts: (1) a structural audit of the Liberty Park and Jordan Park Greenhouses; (2) a marketing and mission study to realign both facilities with conservation and public programming goals; and (3) an architectural revitalization design study focused specifically on the Liberty Park Greenhouse. This report addresses the third component, led by the School of Architecture's TP3C, and presents a vision for transforming the greenhouse complex into a multi-use, accessible, and sustainable community-centered facility. The study included four key phases: (1) conducting archival research to understand and document the greenhouse’s historical development and architectural evolution; (2) facilitating community engagement workshops to gather stakeholders’ input and identify programming priorities; (3) developing digital models and analyzing both existing and desirable building program to support necessary building functions; and (4) developing design proposals for the building’s revitalization possibilities.

Through archival and empirical research, community engagement and iterative design development, the team produced a comprehensive proposal that balances historically sensitive development, innovation, and feasibility. The resulting design concept envisions a 23,300-square-foot public conservatory and greenhouse operations facility that can support education, native plant propagation, and inclusive civic programming while honoring the park’s historic legacy. The design reflects both the community’s aspirations and the City’s goals for reinvigorating Liberty Park as a historic and ecological landmark.
